Jade Phelan
Chief Executive Officer

Reflecting on the 2023-24 financial year, I feel a profound sense of pride and accomplishment.

A major highlight has been the construction of Stage One of the Cancer Care Centre. Our team has expertly navigated the challenges of the post-pandemic landscape, and reaching this point is truly remarkable. The Centre will offer essential services to our community, including radiation therapy, wellness programs, and support groups for those affected by cancer. We are on track to launch these services in late 2024.

Throughout the year, the Board continued to support the Executive Team in enhancing technology and equipment to improve care for residents and patients, as well as overall operational efficiency.  As demonstration of this commitment, we introduced a new Chief Information Officer role into our service and we welcomed Peter Owens to this position.

We invested $1.2 million in state-of-the-art camera systems and endoscopes, allowing surgeons to perform keyhole surgeries and endoscopies with enhanced precision, while also providing patients with images of their procedures.

Additionally, we implemented a new payroll, human resource management, and time-and-attendance system. I am immensely proud of the team’s dedication in bringing this system to fruition.

These vital investments wouldn’t be possible without the generosity of our donors and community members. I sincerely thank you all for your continued support of our hospital.

In June, we bid farewell to our colleagues at our aged care home as we transitioned operations to Apollo Care, a national aged care provider. This decision allows the home to grow and expand its services at The Bays Aged Care, and enables us to reinvest in initiatives like the Cancer Care Centre, advanced medical equipment, and new digital technologies.

Every day, our team at The Bays does an outstanding job of ensuring the safety and support of our patients, residents, and their families. Their compassion, kindness, and empathy make a significant difference in the lives of others, and I want to express my heartfelt gratitude for their exceptional care and dedication.

I also appreciate the invaluable contributions and guidance of our Board, as well as the tireless efforts of our leadership team. I extend my gratitude to our staff, doctors, allied health professionals, and volunteers, whose remarkable commitment to The Bays is commendable.

Looking ahead, we remain optimistic about our future as we continue to serve the Mornington Peninsula community with essential and relevant healthcare services.

CFO's report

Reducing our environmental footprint

The Bays Healthcare Group cares about sustainability and we are thinking about our impact on the planet. Given the amount of waste and the types of waste generated at The Bays, the health sector’s environmental footprint, is not entirely risk-free. We are working with our waste management partner, Envirohealth, to optimise our recycling onsite and improve our environmental sustainability.

We have been recycling organic waste such as food scraps for approximately 2 years, in addition to paper, cardboard and other recyclables. In the last financial year, we diverted 18 per cent of our waste from landfill, a reduction on the previous year due to building and renovation works.

In the next financial year, we will roll out an education program on healthcare waste and sustainability to all staff, and place more recycling and compost bins around the hospital to divert more waste from landfill.
