Acute Care Report

Kellie Bamberry
Director of Clinical Services

The 2023-24 financial year was a pivotal period for The Bays, marked by significant advancements in patient care, staff development, and operational efficiency. As the Director of Clinical Services, I am proud to reflect on the achievements and how we continue to elevate our standard of care to provide ‘The Bays difference’.

As demonstration of our commitment to quality care and a positive patient experience, we introduced a new Quality, Risk and Patient Experience role into our service and we welcomed Nicole Morgan to this role. Nicole has facilitated the introduction of various quality initiatives across the hospital, and has provided individual patients with support and guidance during their hospital stay.

To develop a greater partnership with our consumers, we commenced a collaborative Consumer Engagement Committee, which provides a forum for us to meet with representatives of our community to receive feedback on the needs of our community and our individual patients

We are very proud to continue to report that 99 per cent of our surveyed patients stated that they would return to The Bays and would recommend it to others.  This continues to be one of our proudest achievements.

Maintaining patient safety in an increasingly busy environment remains a top priority. In response, we convened a Sub-Committee of the Board of Directors to commence a Clinical Governance Committee to review clinical data, incidents, protocols, and to support the implementation of our strategic quality priorities.

Nursing and Midwifery Education Fund

We officially launched our Nursing and Midwifery Education Fund in May 2024, with founding partner, Mornington Rotary Club.

The Fund supports our nursing and midwifery staff to participate in specialised training and education programs, in order to provide innovative and specialised care to the Mornington Peninsula community.

Our Stomal Therapy service has benefited from this after registered nurse, Justine Killen successfully completed the Graduate Certificate in Stomal Therapy Nursing.

Mornington Rotary Club also announced they would donate a further $15,000 to the Fund to support the education and development of our nurses and midwives. We are thrilled to have had the support of Mornington Rotary Club over many years.

We are looking forward to being able to provide this support for many of our nursing and midwifery staff over the coming years.

To maintain our commitment to providing cutting-edge surgical care, we made significant investments in new equipment in our operating theatres. These acquisitions not only enhance the precision and safety of our procedures, but also improve the overall experience for both the patient and the surgical team.

As part of this we replaced the fleet of equipment which is used to perform colonoscopies and gastroscopies. This replacement also allowed us to introduce artificial intelligence technology which is used to assist the proceduralist to identify abnormalities in the bowel, which may have been difficult to identify previously.

We also installed two state of the art 4K imaging systems for laparoscopic surgeries, offering unparalleled visual clarity during key hole procedures. The addition of new technology into our operating theatres has enabled surgeons to perform minimally invasive surgeries with greater precision, reducing recovery times and improving patient outcomes.

The progress we’ve made this year is a testament to the dedication and expertise of our nursing staff and the collaborative spirit of the entire hospital team. Together, we will continue to build on these achievements, ensuring that The Bays remains a trusted destination for patient care.
